The ultimate goal of analytics is to inspire action, yet somewhere along the way many people became convinced that the mission was to generate as many charts as possible before the monthly/quarterly review.
Today, you can throw a spreadsheet into an AI tool and get back a dashboard that looks like it was blessed by the gods of PowerPoint. The bars are crisp, the colors are beautiful, and the trend lines are so smooth that nobody wants to ask what they actually mean.
The problem is that a chart is not an insight any more than a thermometer is a cure.
Most of us have sat through those meetings where slide after slide appears, everyone studies the visuals with great seriousness, someone says “very interesting,” and then absolutely nothing changes on Monday morning.
Good analytics answers “what happened.”
Great analytics answers “why it happened and “what should we do about it.”
In a world where AI can create charts in seconds, the real value is no longer in visualizing data. The value lies in finding the uncomfortable conclusion, making the difficult recommendation, and giving the business enough conviction to act.
Because if the analysis doesn’t change a decision, all you’ve really done is create expensive wallpaper for a meeting room.
